چکیده

Monitoring on underground power cables in a close-fitting manner using mobile robot can acquire more actual information about insulation status of cables. Focusing on a water tree detection module in the monitoring system, this paper proposes fringing electric field (FEF) method to detect probably formed water tree in the insulation layer. An arch substrate based interdigital FEF sensor is designed to reduce the disturbance caused by applying traditional interdigital FEF sensor in the water tree detection. The mathematical model of the novel sensor is built by finite element method. Comparison of the electric field distribution that produced by the above two kinds of sensors is carried out by finite element analysis. Effect on novel sensor performance caused by excitation frequency is discussed. Parameters of the proposed sensor are optimized by analyzing the electric field penetrability with varying finger width and electrode separation. Simulation results demonstrate the sensor’s design is reasonable and the electric field penetrability of the novel sensor is remarkably improved compared with traditional interdigital FEF sensor.

Experience with dielectric response measurements on oil-paper insulated cables

Deterioration of the underground power cables insulation has been established to be caused by electrical, thermal and environmental stresses. With the degradation of dielectric strength of the insulation, the underground cables will not be able to function optimally or as planned. As a supplement to the existing dissipation factor and other conventional cable diagnostic measurements, the Decay ...

Prediction of Incipient Faults in Underground Power Cables Utilizing S-Transform and Support Vector Regression

Incipient faults usually emerge from partial discharges which eventually cause insulation degradation between two insulated cable cores. Early detection of incipient faults is of particular importance because insulation defects caused by incipient faults may lead to permanent faults in underground distribution networks. This paper presents a novel approach using S-transform and support vector r...

Mechanical Design of Overhead Lines

8.17 Some Mechanical Principles Introduction Electric power can be transmitted or dis tributed either by means of underground cables or by overhead lines. The underground* cables are rarely used for power transmission due to two main reasons. Firstly, power is generally transmitted over long distances to load centres. Obviously, the installation costs for underground transmission will be very h...

Long-life Xlpe Insulated Power Cable

Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) has become the globally preferred insulation for power cables, both for distribution and transmission system applications. This insulation system provides cost efficiency in operation and procurement, as well as lower environmental and maintenance requirements when compared to older impregnated paper systems. The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the de...
